Arts Day 2013

Once again, Arts Day has proved to be one of the most memorable and enjoyable in the school year. Offering a unique opportunity for Parents and Staff to collaborate at many levels in order to offer a day of broad experiences within the wider array of the arts.

  • Body art: Many thanks to the Parents- and sisters of whom there was at least one!- who worked solidly from ten past nine until the last limb was painted at about 1 o’ clock. A bit like a sheep shearing operation, there were support staff drawn from both Parents and teachers who fetched and returned the boys to their classes, limbs and faces adorned. A big thank you to our school Staff. It is important for me to record the names of our Parent- and sibling- volunteers who were-

Jennifer Lonergan; Martina Newton; Sally Lynch; Fiona Clancy; Tracey Byrne; Clare Roebuck; Violeta Ivaz; Margaret Martin; Cliona Hurley; Alison Lynch; Róisín Curran; Miriam Joyce; Caitriona Bourke; Helen Mooney; Dara Corcoran

  • McCaughey School did a fantastic job of ‘We’re going on a lion hunt’ with their drama group. Michael Martin recently purchased lapel microphones and these were of huge benefit today.
  • The multi-talented Michael Martin led the boys in a beautiful rendition of ‘Mornington Rides’- is there no end to what this man can do??????
  • Johnny the Juggler regaled both the infants and older boys with his combination of pyrotechnics and juggling skills
  • Shay O’ Connor, father of Yang in Room 5 gave a short recital on the sax and the clarinet as well as playing some music on a Japanese instrument which none of us had ever seen before. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of Shay in classrooms from now on………..
  • Aoife Conry, who I know plans a summer camp in the School, choreographed her hip-hop group to great effect also…….some of the moves were fab!!!
  • The boys themselves did yourselves and us proud in the way that they joined in all the songs and made the day a celebration.
  • Our classroom-based clay workshops were as always inspiring and each boy brought home a piece of art which should be treasured!!!!

Finally, a day like today does not happen without much planning, checking out performers, paper and leg work and serious organisation. On your behalf and on behalf of the boys, I wish to thank Mrs. Gabrielle Rowan for leading and organising the day  so very effectively.
